Orthodontic treatment is the branch of dentistry that involves the straightening of crooked or over crowded teeth. A specialist who is trained in this field is called an Orthodontist. Modern orthodontic treatment usually involves the use of fixed braces to move teeth. This enables children and adults to be treated to a high standard, resulting in a smile to be proud of.
Training and Experience
Dr. Yvonne Mackenzie qualified with the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery with honours at Kings College Hospital Dental School in London in 1975, after 5 years of training, gaining the T.W. Widdowson prize for Dentistry in 1972. During this time she was also awarded a scholarship by the General Dental Council.
After a year as a Senior House Officer in the Orthodontic department, Dr. Mackenzie worked in a school dental clinic and at an Orthodontic practice in Bath. Whilst working in Bath she continued her academic studies, passing Part One of the Fellowship in Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1978. In 1979 she started a three year Orthodontic programme at the Royal Dental Hospital in London, leading to the degree of M.Sc. in Orthodontics and the Diploma in Orthodontics of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons. She was awarded the Philippe Walther prize for the best student undertaking this training programme.
In 1982 she commenced Orthodontic practice in Lymington. She provides an Orthodontic Referral Service for the New Forest/Waterside South Hampshire area and provides orthodontic treatment for the patients of many dentists in this area.
In Sepember 2000 Dr Mackenzie was awarded the title of Registered Specialist Orthodontist by the General Dental Council (GDC) and placed on the GDC list of Orthodontic Specialists. www.gdc-uk.org/search_spec.html
Treatment for Adults
Many people think that Adult patients are unable to have Orthodontic treatment. This in fact not the case as Adults can readily have Orthodontics. Dr Yvonne Mackenzie provides a full Orthodontic service for Adults including fixed and removable braces as indicated. If the case is suitable it may be possible to have cosmetic tooth coloured braces to make the treatment less visible.
Dr Mackenzie provides treatment for Adults on a private basis only
Treatment for Children
Dr Mackenzie
provides Orthodontics for Children Privately and on the NHS.
All
patients will be offered both these options.
Patients
who wish to be treated privately will be offered urgent appointments within
a short time and will be able to book appointments at any time of the day including
after school. (Subject to availability)
Patients
who wish to have NHS treatment will be placed on to a waiting list and will
be offered an appointment at some time in the future. An indication of the length
of the waiting list will be given with the acknowledgement of the referral for
treatment. NHS appointments are only available in the mornings.
Frequently Asked Questions about Orthodontics
Q. Who can have Orthodontics?
Almost anyone, adult or child, can have orthodontic treatment
Q. What type of braces are available?
Braces can be removable, fixed or cosmetic. Removable braces can be used for minor corrections or for treating jaw discrepancies in children. Fixed braces (train tracks) are precision appliances which enable the Orthodontist to position teeth with great accuracy and are used for most treatments. Cosmetic Fixed braces are tooth coloured braces which are very popular with adults as they blend in with the teeth and are thus more cosmetically acceptable.
Q. How long does treatment take?
Treatment times vary a lot according to the treatment needed. An idea of how long the treatment is likely to take will be given at the start. An average treatment time is about 18 months.
Q. What do I do if I want treatment for myself or my child?
The first thing to do is to discuss your concerns with your dentist. They will then contact the practice and we will send you an appointment plus a scale of fees.
Q. Who will provide my routine treatment?
Whilst you are having Orthodontic treatment it is essential that you maintain your normal visits to your general dentist. Under no circumstances will patients referred for specialist treatment be allowed to register for routine dental treatment at Solent House.
Q. What will happen on my first appointment?
Do you have a question you
would like answered ?? please do email us with your question about orthodontic
treatment on info@orthodontic-centre.co.uk
On
the first examination the Orthodontist will examine the patient's teeth
and discuss the pros and cons of treatment. A second appointment will then be organised at which the diagnosis and treatment plan for the patient will be discussed and agreed. At this stage the cost and likely length of the treatment will also be discussed. If the treatment plan is acceptable, and a decision is made to start the treatment, then further appointments will be made. |
